Clusters and Competitiveness Foundation

 

The Fundació Clusters i Competitivitat (Clusters and Competitiveness Foundation) is a non-profit, independent foundation, set-up to evaluate the competitiveness of regional economic clusters across the globe and to promote the use of clusters as an effective tool in the socio-economic development of regions throughout the world.

The Foundation provides objective, independent reports assessing the strengths and weaknesses of clusters, the quality of local institutions affecting these cluster, and the trends in cluster performance over time. As more clusters are analysed over time, peer-to-peer comparison using statistical methods will become possible.

The main objectives of the Foundation are;

  1. To improve the competitiveness of the economy of regions throughout the world in the field of business clusters.
  2. To give government officials, company leaders, industry associations, universities and other cluster participants an objective systematic tool for assessing cluster position, evaluating local policies and institutions and validating cluster development strategies.

The uses for the reports generated by the Foundation are threefold;

  1. It will help business leaders to better understand their clusters´ competitive position.
  2. It will enable these leaders to evaluate their current strategy and operations and examine possible ways of improving their business environment.
  3. It will act as an aid to governments wishing to measure progress and prioritise cluster-specific policy choices.

Board of Trustees

 

The Foundation is represented, governed and administered by the Board of Trustees.

The founding trustees of the Foundation, and those who will oversee its independence are the following:

  1. IESE Prof. Antoni Subirà, former Minister of Industry of Catalonia, who will chair the Foundation.
  2. Michael E. Porter, director of the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness of Harvard Business School and Bishop William Lawrence University Professor at Harvard.
  3. Jordi Conejos, Doyen from the Economists Professional Association of Catalonia.
Several regional and national governments throughout the world have expressed a firm interest in participating in this initiative. These will be represented by up to 9 trustees on the Board.
